Save the 1,200-Year Legacy of Muro-ji Temple: A Call to the World

 Hello, everyone.

Today, I would like to share a story about Nyonin Koya Muro-ji Temple, located in the serene mountains of Muro, Uda City, Nara Prefecture.

Since ancient times, Muro-ji has served as a vital site for solar worship. It was established as a "shingo-ji" (shrine-temple) for the nearby Muro Ryuketsu Shrine, which honors the Dragon God, the deity of water. It is a sacred place where nature and prayer have intertwined for millennia.

I have visited Muro-ji countless times, not only for prayer but also to study and research the preservation of temples and shrines. One of my most vivid memories from decades ago was my first visit. Unaware of the layout, I found myself wandering up the stone staircase—all 720 steps of it—reaching the "Okunoin" (Inner Sanctuary).

There, I met a staff member named Mr. Nakamura, who felt like a living incarnation of Kannon Bodhisattva (the Goddess of Mercy). Though he has since retired, I believe he provided healing and comfort to many pilgrims over the years.

The Challenge: Preserving National Treasures

Muro-ji is now undertaking a rare and vital challenge: Crowdfunding to raise funds for the restoration of its National Treasures—the Five-storied Pagoda and the Golden Hall.

In my previous posts, I’ve discussed how temples and shrines are supported by "Three Pillars." This crowdfunding project directly addresses the most visible pillar: The Maintenance of Sacred Structures.

Support Our National Treasures: Crowdfunding for the Five-storied Pagoda and Golden Hall

Under the theme "Preserving 1,200 Years of Prayer for the Future," we have officially launched our crowdfunding campaign as of 9:00 AM on April 24, 2026.

Muro-ji’s Five-storied Pagoda and Golden Hall face a harsh natural environment. The traditional thatched roofs (Hiwadabuki and Kokarabuki) have exceeded their lifespan, and deterioration is becoming severe. While we have managed with emergency repairs, we have now decided to begin a full-scale restoration.

While we receive some subsidies from the national and prefectural governments, the remaining cost is approximately 100 million yen, a significant burden for the temple. This is why we have turned to crowdfunding.

The "All-or-Nothing" Rule: If we do not reach our first goal, all donations will be returned, and the project will not receive any funding. Your support in spreading the word on social media is vital to our success.

I am honored to participate in this effort, even in a small way. I will continue to share this story through my blog and social media to reach supporters across the globe.

Let’s protect this beautiful heritage together.

Asahi Hanasaki With palms joined in prayer (Gassho)

From this land of prayer, I, Asahi Hanasaki, am introducing the "Harmony of Wa" to the whole world.

I am a delivery driver in Japan who also helps protect and maintain a traditional Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple. Balancing these two worlds gives me a unique perspective on modern society. Through my writing, I aim to share the warmth of mutual aid and help readers find the courage to live another day.
